Another challenging perspective from Graham Le Sar…
“Through working with Graham, I was able to get clarity on what I really want my life to be about and shine a light on what was blocking me at a deeper level. This allowed me the space to question my old and outdated beliefs, decisions and assumptions in a safe space and either discard or re-evaluate them. This truly was a journey of self-discovery that allowed me to proceed at my own pace and let my life unfold in its own unique way. Today I know that I really do ‘play in a safe playground.” – Chris Nel: Entrepreneur
“All business proceeds on beliefs, on judgments of probabilities, and not on certainties.” – Charles W Eliot (1834 – 1926)
“It’s lonely at the top” the trite old saying slips glibly off his tongue. “What do you mean?” I countered… I know what the saying means but I want to understand what lurks behind his statement.
He is the CEO of a large company in the city. He controls assets, resources, people and is responsible to his Board of Directors, his shareholders and his staff, all of whom are looking over his shoulder prepared to wield the two edged sword of blame and criticism with merciless precision.
“Well”, he says preparing to cut to the chase, “in my position, I am expected to know exactly what to do, when to do it and how to get away with it at any one time. My people look to me to steer this ship safely between the proverbial rock and hard place (big on clichés is this guy) as well as avoiding the wrecks of companies that have gone before and failed. I have got upwards of twenty years’ experience in this industry, the last seven managing and leading companies just like this one… that’s not the problem though. Today’s challenges are so diverse and so different from what I have seen before, and are happening so fast that I more often than not feel like a fraud. Most of the time I feel as if I am flying by the seat of my pants” (yet another cliché).
“My people”, he continues, “especially my senior team are stuck in the same briar patch (I give up) as I am, but they have the advantage of being able to go for help… mostly to me. Where do I go to? My people look to me to have all the answers and to know exactly what to do in any given situation. The real problem is that I’m scared. I don’t have all the answers and the text books don’t cover the stuff we are facing today. The problems in the economy, the socio political arena and the rate of change in technology, both here and internationally, are more complex than ever before.”
“Sure, I can figure it out,” he adds with a bit of his old flash, “but not off the cuff. I need to be able to brainstorm with someone that I can share my doubts and fears with without fear of judgment. It can’t be my managers; they look to me for the answers. To them I am the fearless leader, invincible, infallible, in control… they need to look up and trust my ‘certainty’ so as to be able to lead and inspire their people.”
“I feel overwhelmed a lot of the time and it is affecting me in more ways than just at work: my ulcer is back, I’m not eating right, and I’m tired at home and snappy with my kids. So what do I do?” he asks shaking his head at the enormity of it all.
Paradoxically the problems facing this corporate leader are not unique. Dr Robert Holden, author of Success Intelligence describes a new world of work where people are required to achieve more success, at a faster pace; with fewer resources; more competition; constant uncertainty and in a global marketplace
In addition to the workplace concerns, he says, individuals are increasingly facing a Crisis in Meaning. Time Magazine reports that 75% to 90% of all visits to primary care doctors are for stress related problems, job stress being far and away the leading source. Health & Safety Executive UK adds that work-related stress costs society about 3.7 billion Pounds every year at 1995/96 prices (arguably R 649 billion in today’s South African terms) and the National Institute of Mental Health USA is of the cheery opinion that everyone will, at some time in their life, be affected by depression – their own or someone else’s.
The stress, doubts and uncertainties while reflected against external factors, stem mostly from within, stemming fundamentally from a self-sabotaging fear of being found out. The problems may be external, they always have been. They are perhaps more complex than we have ever been asked to face before and certainly seem to come at an increasingly faster pace, but we have always been called upon to face challenges and solve them. That is fundamentally what makes us human… the ability, and willingness to find creative solutions to problems.
If it were not so then we would still be huddled naked and shivering in our family communities as we watched the unblinking eyes of predators just beyond our cave entrance. We have come a long way and probably have exponentially further to go yet. We can only do it with belief in ourselves and hope in our future.
My client was seeing problems instead of challenges and questions instead of answers!
