Another challenging perspective from Graham Le Sar…
“The impact on my business performance was almost immediate; the effect was massive, allowing me to move my business from pedestrian growth to one of the fastest growing in the Old Mutual Franchise environment. Graham’s vast knowledge and expertise speaks for itself, and when combined with the high degree of personal involvement he shows this makes for a very powerful package.” – Adam Scott – MD & Franchise Principal: Iconic Assurance (Old Mutual Franchise)
“Two men look out through the same bars, one sees mud, the other sees stars” – Ogden Nash
Many South Africans around me seem stuck in a survival spiral, circling the drain in a swirl of dirty greasy dishwater, just going through the motions and hoping that something miraculous will happen to save them from their expected fate of being sucked inexorably down into the abyss…
The reason isn’t really hard to find: every form of media seems hell bent on bombarding us with all the hard luck, nasty, brutal, depressing news out there, which is picked up and snowballed by fake news junkies intent on herding the frightened sheep closer and closer to the whirlpool of dread.
The reality is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating for the preferred coping mechanism of the ostrich – bury you head in the sand and hope the bad guys think you are a weird feathery bush and pass you by. Sure, some bad stuff is happening out there, but is it really as bad as we are being led to believe?
Take a moment: If time and money was absolutely no object, and you knew that you could not fail, what would you be doing? What would you be or do or have that you do not have now?
These questions start many coaching conversations with my clients. Initially they can tell me more about what they don’t want than what they do want, but as our coaching relationship evolves their answers begin to evolve.
They begin to believe that something more, something bigger and better is possible and that they might just be able to reach for it. As they begin to trust themselves again, their questions change from why can’t I? to how can I? and fresh possibilities begin to emerge.
As they give themselves permission to have more, do more and be more these possibilities attract opportunities and if they have the courage to take action, reality follows as they begin to achieve their goals and ultimately live the life that they were meant to live.
Certainly expectations in South Africa are pessimistic: a slowing economy, massive unemployment, corruption and allegations of state capture, energy and water crises to name but a few, but the solutions will not come from the whiny, whingey moaners stuck in their gloomy predicted future.
The solutions will come from you and me who believe in a better future and are prepared to do something different each and every day to realise it.
The choice really is yours: you can either be a victim of your circumstances or the creator of your own solutions.
How about you?
Which one will you choose…?
